Hi, I’m Kelly, I don’t believe that working through anxiety has to be a long, hard road full of hours of therapy and medication.
I’m living proof that it can be done without these things.
From a young age, I suffered from social anxiety and crippling health anxiety.
Three years ago, my health anxiety was so bad I couldn’t get out of bed. I was glued to my phone, googling every symptom I thought I had.
Almost everyday I would book a doctor’s appointment craving reassurance that I did not have a disease that was going to result in a degrading and painful death, and at the weekend when the doctors were closed I would often take myself to A&E for the same reassurance.
I share this with you to give you hope because well now, things couldn’t be more different.
People I’ve met in the last couple of years are astounded when I share my story because I’m now one of the most chilled out annoyingly positive people I know.
I’m practically horizontal. My anxiety used to be off the charts, but it now sits at a 1 or 2 out of 10.
Last year I think I went to the doctors about three times and that was for routine checkups.
There is nothing superhuman about me, so if I can overcome my anxiety, I know that you can too, but bear with me because my approach is different to the conventional way of working.
What's different about my approach?
As an adult, I had two rounds of CBT therapy for my health anxiety.
I found that some of the techniques worked in the short term and when I was having better periods, but each time my anxiety was triggered again the techniques didn’t work.
I believe that’s because these techniques are very mind based and as Albert Einstein said…
“Problems cannot be solved with the same mind that created them”
Anxiety is created in and lives in the mind and that’s why using the mind to overcome anxiety is uncomfortable, takes a long time and in the long term often doesn’t last.
Trying to use the mind to decrease anxiety actually creates more of it. Ever tried to push your anxious thoughts away only to have them push back at you harder ?
So what’s the answer?
Simply getting out of the mind and into the present moment where there is rarely ever a real problem.
I know you’re probably thinking, “Yeah right, if it were that simple, I would have done it by now.” So why haven’t you?
The reason most of us don’t is because our minds love to overcomplicate things, strengthened by years of hearing things like…
“if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”
“You have to work hard to solve a problem”
and my favourite, “Life’s hard”
so anything easy sounding it dismisses straight away.
The fact is that your mind is a terrorist that likes to hold you hostage. If you’re fed up feeling the way you do, you have three choices
- Do nothing and just accept it as “just the way it is” Another awful negative and disempowering phrase.
- Turn to medication and therapy. How effective have these been for you or people you know?
- Try a different approach.
I hope you choose three because I want you to feel as amazing as I do.
To feel so excited about the future you want to burst, to have such a powerfully positive energy that people are just drawn to you.
And, to look back with disbelief and say, “Wow! was that really me?” as you step into the version of yourself you’ve always wanted to be.
